So your child is playing soccer in North District.
Welcome!
Soccer in North District (ND) is open to girls ages 5 - 18. The ND is comprised of Maple Ridge, Burnaby, New Westminster, Coquitlam, Port Moody, Port Coquitlam, Pitt Meadows, Anmore & Belcarra. Players living within ND are able to register in any of the areas mentioned.
Soccer is considered an inexpensive sport. Clubs supply players with uniforms & socks. Players are required to purchase their own shin guards and soccer cleats.
Players are grouped by birth year, starting at U6 (under 6) and going up to U18. Rules are adjusted for the age of the players. The younger divisions U6 - U11 are strictly recreational/educational, with the level of competition increasing in the upper divisions.
The first half of the playing season runs from September through to the middle of December with a Christmas break. The second half resumes the 2nd week in January and generally goes to the end of February. The upper division's season may go longer if teams are entered in cup play downs or tournaments.
Players are expected to attend 1-2 practices a week. These practices are generally 60 - 90 mins., depending on the level your child is playing and field times. All coaches in ND are volunteers; practice times are scheduled at the coach's convenience during the week.
Games are played on Sundays, sometimes starting at 10:00 am. Depending on the age group of your child, the length of games could range from 20 to 45 min halves. As with most sports, there is some travel involved and away games may be played in other Lower Mainland cities and the Fraser Valley.
Girls playing U6 - U10, play what is called mini soccer. Games are played on a small field with fewer players on at one time. The games consist of two 20 - 25 min halves. The playing rules are modified for these age groups.
U11 and up, the fields and goals are 3/4 size field. The length of game increases with age until U17, at which time players are playing two 4 min halves. The Swiss-based Federation Internationale de Football Association, or FIFA maintains the rules of the game. You can view these rules at the FIFI website
Soccer is played under various weather conditions, don't assume your child's game is cancelled until you hear from the coach.
